Before Entering the Hospice Where an Old Friend is Dying

Poem_header

lines: Thomas Cochran

When I heard the news

that he’d made this call

I felt uncertain and thought

briefly of staying away,

as I have from his porch and table

these past few years.

But we’d had no falling out,

only a change in our routes.

Passing, we always waved,

hello and see you later

in a single gesture—

no need, until now, for good-bye.
